Vajra — Introduction

Introduction

The genesis of India's most advanced combat aircraft — designed to meet every contingency.

The Vajra programme was initiated in 2008 following a technology assessment by the Indian Air Force that identified the need for a domestic fifth-generation platform to replace ageing MiG-21 and MiG-27 fleets and to reduce strategic dependence on foreign suppliers.

Origins

Development responsibility was assigned to IndoFighter Corporation in consortium with DRDO's Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) in Bengaluru. The programme drew on technologies matured during the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft programme, while setting far more ambitious requirements in terms of payload, range, survivability, and sensor fusion.

The first prototype performed its maiden flight on 12 April 2016 at HAL Airport, Bengaluru, with Chief Test Pilot Wg Cdr (Retd.) R.K. Sharma at the controls. Initial Operational Clearance was granted to the Indian Air Force on 15 August 2022 — India's 75th Independence Day — in a ceremony attended by the Prime Minister and Defence Minister.

Design Philosophy

The Vajra is designed around the concept of omnirole versatility: a single airframe capable of executing air superiority, close air support, deep strike, maritime strike, reconnaissance, and nuclear delivery roles in a single sortie without configuration changes. This philosophy demanded highly integrated avionics, a large and flexible weapons bay, and an advanced open-systems architecture that can accommodate new sensors and effectors rapidly.

Programme Partners

The Vajra programme involves over 500 Indian companies, including Bharat Electronics Limited (avionics), Bharat Forge (titanium structures), BEL (radar processing), and dozens of MSME suppliers of composites, fasteners, and precision machined components.
