Vajra — Evolve and Innovate
A structured block upgrade roadmap ensures the Vajra remains at the leading edge of combat capability through the 2040s.
IndoFighter has defined a four-block upgrade roadmap for the Vajra that progressively enhances the aircraft's radar, weapons, engine, and network capabilities while preserving backwards compatibility with existing support infrastructure.
Block 1 (In Service): Uttam Mk1 radar, Kavach EW suite, Astra Mk1, BrahMos-NG capability, initial datalink.
Block 2 (Delivery from 2025): Uttam Mk2 AESA, Surya IRST, Astra Mk2 BVR integration, enhanced cockpit with AI decision aids, quantum-encrypted datalink.
Block 3 (From 2028): Domestic engine (Kaveri 2.0) replacing GE-414, directed energy weapon (DEW) pod integration, advanced SIGINT suite, manned-unmanned teaming capability with Shakti UCAV.
Block 4 (2032+): Full F/A 6th-generation features including optional crewed operations, AI-assisted autonomous modes, hypersonic weapons integration, and advanced stealth coatings.
The Kaveri 2.0 programme, led by GTRE Bengaluru, aims to produce a 98 kN afterburning turbofan with a thrust-to-weight ratio of 8.5:1. Ground testing of the core is complete; full engine testing is scheduled for 2026, with qualification for flight by 2028.
